BEAUTY: Sculpture--Jim Hodges

I love the bright, shiny boulders Jim Hodges created and showed last winter at Barbara Gladstone in Manhattan. Hodges hand selected boulders to wrap tightly with colored stainless steel. The result reminds me of molten metal as the steel hugs the contours of the rocks and seamlessly blends in with the surface. Hodges says, “What I was concentrating on was that the surface would be continuous—that one’s eye would pass over the surface without interruption.” The bright colors were inspired by a trip to India. The artist says he was struck by a “layering, layering, layering of material, to the point where what’s being covered, its identity, seemed to start being erased by the accumulation of color.”
