BEAUTY: Painting--Eleanor Ray

The work of painter Eleanor Ray hits all my buttons. She exhibits a wonderful painterly sense with her use of the medium itself. I love when artists are free with their paint and glob it on liberally, showing brush strokes and the way the pigment moves around on the surface. And her subject matter--empty rooms, empty studios, empty courtyards--is so plain and plaintive with echoes of American artists like Hopper and Wyeth, even when she is painting a roof top view of Florence or the side portico at the Basilica di Santa Croce.

And I am particularly drawn to her images of a bank of wall windows seen at different times and seasons. She has captured the play of light and contrast beautifully.
