The New TWA Hotel at JFK

Set for a 2018 opening, architecture firm Lubrano Ciavarra Architects along with MCR Developers are giving new life to the iconic Eero Saarinen-designed central terminal at the John F. Kennedy Airport by turning the abandoned structure into a 505-room hotel! Originally created in 1962, the terminal was a thrilling symbol of air travel before the advent of large jets.

The winged mid-century modern building was deemed an Historic Landmark in 1994 and was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 2005, so it will be sensitively preserved...but two additional buildings containing hotel suites will flank the original terminal. Event spaces will be underground. Here are renderings of what the project will look like.

Empty since 2001, the terminal currently looks like this (they simply have to keep the chile pepper carpet designed by Saarinen himself!).

And to advertise the restoration project and coming hotel, MCR Developers have installed what they are calling a TWA Lounge on the 86th floor of One World Trade Center in Manhattan, complete with a mini-TWA museum of artifacts from the Golden Age of Air Travel! Visitors can even see JFK Airport only 12 miles away, to the east!

Meanwhile, construction continues on the foundations for the new hotel wings as well as the event spaces.
